Pending Legislation Affecting Prank Callers

Recent bills in both the US House and Senate look to clamp down on the recent increase in swatting calls – calls which utilize caller ID spoofing to target law enforcement against prank call victims. The implications of this legislation could impact  prank callers who do not partake in the involvement of police, SWAT teams and other first responders in non-existing emergencies.

Earlier this month, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gathered with SWAT officers and other law enforcement to announce he is introducing legislation targeting swatting calls. These police officers were all responders at a recent swatting incident in Syracuse, NY which led to the evacuation of 1,100 employees from a state government building. Read more

So, What Are the Laws in the US Regarding Recording Prank Calls?

“Is it legal to even record your phone prank calls?” I get asked this question from time to time by new listeners and people who I personally introduce to my show.  Well it’s not that easy to answer since the laws can pretty much depond on that state you are calling from.

The US recording laws vary from state to state between One-Party and Two-Party consent. One-Party consent allows that only one person in the phone conversation needs to be consenting to allow the recording of it. Two-Party consent, on the other hand, stipulates that both parties know they are being recorded AND consent to it. Read more

Pranksters Arrested After Faking Fatal Traffic Accident

It’s probably not a good idea to stage a fatal car accident for the purposes of a public prank. It’s probably an even worse idea to actually stick around until first responders show up at the scene.

That’s exactly what two Reno, KS men did recently. A concerned citizen called 911 to report seeing two people lying on the side of the road, bloodied with clothing strewn about amid an apparent car crash. EMS crews arrived and the two pranksters shrugged it off as a practical joke and left the scene before police could arrive. The men were later arrested after sheriff’s deputies tracked them down based on their license plate information.

Kid Delivers Personal Apology After Prank Call To 911

A 6th grader in Savannah, GA prank called 911 with the classic “Deez Nuts” joke. After getting caught, his parents had him write an apology letter and then took him to the Savannah-Chatham County 911 Center to read it to the workers there. The youth is reportedly still on “lockdown” according to his parents despite the fact that he was forgiven by the dispatch staff

“MARCH 12–A teenage girl and a male cohort were arrested early today for a kidnapping prank pulled on employees at a Taco Bell in Ohio, cops report.

RBCP Just Stop It Already!!!

OK so it probably wasn’t really RBCP, but someone tricked a Circle K worker in Globe AZ to do $30,000 in damages to their store. I should feel bad that this employee who was tricked, but to be honest this person must have been pretty dumb. It is one thing to throw some “recalled” stuff out, or close the store down. But to “discharge fire extinguishers in the store, throw the extinguishers through the windows and destroy merchandise, computers, registers and security televisions” because “security” tells you to just don’t make any sense.  Click HERE to read the full story.

Stupid People Doing A Stupid Pranks

These two thought that wearing masks while moving a fake body at a car wash in broad daylight would be a harmless prank that everyone thought was hilarious. And they actually seemed surprised that the cops were really pissed about it. Man jailed after admitting to prank calling 9-1-1 over 100 times
